Consulate Takes Part in Remembrance Day Ceremonies Across the District
Consulate representatives took part in ceremonies throughout Veterans’ Week. U.S. diplomats attended ceremonies organized by Veteran Affairs Canada, the City of Huntingdon, the English School Board of Montreal, the National Field of Honour Cemetery and two branches of the Royal Canadian Legion, in Montreal and Kahnawake. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton attended the sixth Forum for the Future in Morocco, an important regional conference that brings together leading government officials from the Middle East and North Africa, representatives of the major advanced economies, and civil society and private sector leaders. In her speech, Secretary Clinton emphasized jobs, entrepreneurship, science, technology, and education.

Ambassador Jacobson Addresses the 15th Annual CABC Policy Forum
Ambassador David Jacobson addressed the 15th Annual Canadian American Business Council (CABC) Policy Forum in Montreal, themed “Canada/U.S. Relations in the Obama Era”. The Ambassador spoke of the close relationship between the U.S. and Canada and our partnership on global issues. Consul General Joins Dignitaries for Distinguished Quebec Address
Hosted by the Institute on Quebec Studies at the State University of New York at Plattsburgh, the annual Distinguished Québec Address features individuals who have made a positive contribution to Québec public life. This year, Quebec Minister Pierre Arcand spoke on "Québec and the climate change challenge: A lead actor in North America". Public Affairs Officer Speaks at SUNY Plattsburgh's Canadian Studies Event
Public Affairs Officer Peter Martin met with students, staff and other diplomats at an October 17th event celebrating achievements of the State University of New York at Plattsburgh's Center for the Study of Canada. In his remarks, Martin praised Director Christopher Kirkey and the Center’s staff for their leadership in Canadian studies in the U.S. and highlighted the close partnership the Consulate enjoys with SUNY-Plattsburgh. Ambassador Jacobson Makes Quebec First Stop
Only a few days after officially beginning his assignment in Ottawa, the new U.S. Ambassador to Canada, David Jacobson, paid his first visit to Montreal and the province of Quebec. Ambassador and Mrs. Jacobson visited the Consulate and began to familiarize themselves with important institutions of the city such as CAE, a world leader in flight simulators. President Barack Obama wins 2009 Nobel Peace Prize
President Barack Obama was announced as the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize winner today. The Norwegian Nobel Committee cited President Obama’s “extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples." Of special note was President Obama’s outreach to the Muslim world and attempts to curb nuclear proliferation.
The choice made Obama the third sitting U.S. president to win the Nobel Peace Prize. Other U.S. presidents to receive the prize were President Theodore Roosevelt in 1906 and President Woodrow Wilson in 1919.
In their selection, the Nobel committee praised Obama's creation of "a new climate in international politics" and said he had returned multilateral diplomacy and institutions like the U.N. to the center of the world stage."His diplomacy,” noted the Committee, “ is founded in the concept that those who are to lead the world must do so on the basis of values and attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world's population."

Consulate Hosts Foreign Service Officer Test
The Consulate recently hosted the Foreign Service Officer Test for American citizens interested in joining the U.S. Foreign Service. The Foreign Service is a corps of about 11,500 employees who are dedicated to representing America and responding to the needs of American citizens in other countries. Members of the Foreign Service can be sent to any embassy, consulate, or other diplomatic mission anywhere in the world, at any time, to serve the diplomatic needs of the United States. American Citizen McGill Alumni Win Nobel Prize
The Consulate congratulates McGill Alumni Canadian-American Dr. Willard Boyle and American Dr. Jack Szostak for their recently awarded Nobel Prizes. Dr. Boyle co-invented the CCD (Charge Coupled Devices) sensor found in all digital cameras today. Dr. Szostak shares his prize with two other researches for their work in chromosome research. They join the ranks of five other Nobel Laureates and former McGill alumni. For information click here and here.

Consulate Welcomes Friends to Photography Exhibit
The Consulate General recently hosted an intimate reception with prominent cultural and business leaders at the charming Hotel Gault in Old Montreal. The event featured Montreal photographer Christine Bourgier’s exhibition, "Spirit of Hope", featuring photos taken in Washington, D.C. on Inauguration Day. American Sheldon Schwartz named Best Director at YoungCuts Film Festival
Held annually in Montreal, the YoungCuts Film Festival is known as the world's most important film festival event for filmmakers 25 and under. The top 100 short films produced by emerging filmmakers played at Cinema du Parc this past week, culminating with a top ten screening and award ceremony. Sheldon Schwartz’s film, The Bridge, was nominated in several categories, along with Canadian, American and other foreign films. A Consulate representative accepted the award on his behalf and conveyed his message of encouragement to other young filmmakers.

Border Region Leaders Visit Consulate General
Political, civic and academic leaders from New York, Vermont, and Maine visited Montreal September 25 to learn about Consulate operations and meet counterparts from the province of Quebec. Local guests included members of parliament, political attachés, educators, business leaders and representatives of the Mohawk Nation. Visitors were offered a behind-the-scenes tour to better understand consular services offered, and all had a chance to make cross-border connections during a luncheon and discussion in the afternoon. Consul General Attends Opening of Place des Festivals
Consul General Lee McClenny joined thousands of Montrealers for the official opening of the Place des Festivals on September 7. The opening ceremony featured a high-tech parade and performances by home-grown stars, and finished with a dazzling light-enhanced water-jet show. While inaugurated officially on September 7th, the space was first used by Stevie Wonder at the 2009 Montreal Jazz Festival, just hours after his appearance at the Consulate’s Independence Day celebration.

Consulate Offers The Foreign Service Officer Test - Register Now!
U.S. Citizens who are interested in taking the Foreign Service Officer Test should visit careers.state.gov to get information on the exam and register for the test. The website also has information on many different career opportunities with the Department of State.
The U.S. Consulate General in Montreal will be administering the Foreign Service exam on October 6, 2009. Please be advised that the registration process for the Foreign Service Officer Test has changed. Applicants will start by filling out an online registration package that consists of an application form and a set of personal narrative questions that, taken together, provide information about your experience and qualifications. Applicants will need approximately three hours to complete the registration package.

NASCAR events at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve
Consul Dan Hamilton and Consulate staff took part in the NASCAR events at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve on Sunday. After attending the drivers meeting, given by Nationwide Series Director Joe Balash, Consul Hamilton met with NASCAR President Mike Helton and enjoyed a tour of the garage and pits.
After stirring renditions of both the U.S. and Canadian national anthems by Montreal singer Jonas Tomalty, NASCAR fans from both sides of the border enjoyed the friendly competition, cheering on their favorite drivers and appreciating the exciting environment.
President Barack Obama recently welcome NASCAR drivers to the White House where he talked about the humble beginnings of this uniquely American sport and commended the Association for their support of U.S. veterans and other philanthropic efforts. Renewable Energy Specialist Visits Montreal
American renewable energy specialist Dr. Rick Schwerdtfeger recently visited Hydro-Québec’s Research Institute in Varennes, touring Hydro's mechanical and high voltage laboratories,learning about their innovative projects, and exchanging ideas with Hydro employees. Dr. Schwerdtfeger also met with executives from Novo Energies, a Montreal based company that has developed and designed a new process that transforms plastics and tires waste to liquid fuels. Schwerdtfeger was part of a U.S. Department of State program that brings U.S. experts to Quebec to engage with their counterparts and other interested Quebecers.

U.S. Department of State Launches Second Annual Democracy Video Challenge
The Democracy Video Challenge is an online video competition that asks people worldwide to share their thoughts on democracy by completing the phrase, “Democracy is….” By creating and submitting democracy-themed videos for the online competition, contestants can have their work recognized globally and compete for a U.S.-based travel prize. The video may use any story telling style including, fiction, documentary, comedy, music video or animation and must be no longer than three minutes. To learn more about the Challenge click here.

Issues in Focus
Under the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI), for entry into the United States at land or sea borders, as of January 31, 2008:
-
Oral declarations of citizenship alone will no longer be accepted;
-
U.S. and Canadian citizens ages 19 and older will need to present a government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license, along with proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate or naturalization certificate;
-
Children ages 18 and under will only be required to present proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate;
-
Passports and trusted traveler program cards - NEXUS, FAST, and SENTRI - will continue to be accepted for cross-border travel.
All existing nonimmigrant visa and passport requirements will remain in effect and will not be altered by this change. A passport has been required for air travel since January 23, 2007. [read more on WHTI]
NEW. Entry requirements at land or sea borders in effect June 1, 2009:
Washington -- The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the U.S. Department of State (DOS) announced today the final rule for the land and sea portion of the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI), a core 9/11 Commission recommendation. The WHTI final rule requires travelers to present a passport or other approved secure document denoting citizenship and identity for all land and sea travel into the United States. WHTI establishes document requirements for travelers entering the United States who were previously exempt, including citizens of the U.S., Canada and Bermuda. These document requirements will be effective June 1, 2009
