American Citizen McGill Alumni Win Nobel Prize
The Consulate congratulates McGill Alumni Canadian-American Dr. Willard Boyle and American Dr. Jack Szostak for their recently awarded Nobel Prizes. Dr. Boyle co-invented the CCD (Charge Coupled Devices) sensor found in all digital cameras today. Dr. Szostak shares his prize with two other researches for their work in chromosome research. They join the ranks of five other Nobel Laureates and former McGill alumni. For information click here and here.

American Sheldon Schwartz named Best Director at YoungCuts Film Festival
Held annually in Montreal, the YoungCuts Film Festival is known as the world's most important film festival event for filmmakers 25 and under. The top 100 short films produced by emerging filmmakers played at Cinema du Parc this past week, culminating with a top ten screening and award ceremony. Sheldon Schwartz’s film, The Bridge, was nominated in several categories, along with Canadian, American and other foreign films. A Consulate representative accepted the award on his behalf and conveyed his message of encouragement to other young filmmakers.

Border Region Leaders Visit Consulate General Border Region Leaders Visit Consulate General
Political, civic and academic leaders from New York, Vermont, and Maine visited Montreal September 25 to learn about Consulate operations and meet counterparts from the province of Quebec. Local guests included members of parliament, political attachés, educators, business leaders and representatives of the Mohawk Nation. Visitors were offered a behind-the-scenes tour to better understand consular services offered, and all had a chance to make cross-border connections during a luncheon and discussion in the afternoon. Consul General Attends Opening of Place des Festivals Consul General Attends Opening of Place des Festivals
Consul General Lee McClenny joined thousands of Montrealers for the official opening of the Place des Festivals on September 7. The opening ceremony featured a high-tech parade and performances by home-grown stars, and finished with a dazzling light-enhanced water-jet show. While inaugurated officially on September 7th, the space was first used by Stevie Wonder at the 2009 Montreal Jazz Festival, just hours after his appearance at the Consulate’s Independence Day celebration.

Consulate Offers The Foreign Service Officer Test - Register Now!
U.S. Citizens who are interested in taking the Foreign Service Officer Test should visit careers.state.gov to get information on the exam and register for the test. The website also has information on many different career opportunities with the Department of State.

The U.S. Consulate General in Montreal will be administering the Foreign Service exam on October 6, 2009. Please be advised that the registration process for the Foreign Service Officer Test has changed. Applicants will start by filling out an online registration package that consists of an application form and a set of personal narrative questions that, taken together, provide information about your experience and qualifications. Applicants will need approximately three hours to complete the registration package.

NASCAR events at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve NASCAR events at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve
Consul Dan Hamilton and Consulate staff took part in the NASCAR events at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve on Sunday. After attending the drivers meeting, given by Nationwide Series Director Joe Balash, Consul Hamilton met with NASCAR President Mike Helton and enjoyed a tour of the garage and pits.

After stirring renditions of both the U.S. and Canadian national anthems by Montreal singer Jonas Tomalty, NASCAR fans from both sides of the border enjoyed the friendly competition, cheering on their favorite drivers and appreciating the exciting environment.

President Barack Obama recently welcome NASCAR drivers to the White House where he talked about the humble beginnings of this uniquely American sport and commended the Association for their support of U.S. veterans and other philanthropic efforts. Renewable Energy Specialist Visits Montreal Renewable Energy Specialist Visits Montreal
American renewable energy specialist Dr. Rick Schwerdtfeger recently visited Hydro-Québec’s Research Institute in Varennes, touring Hydro's mechanical and high voltage laboratories,learning about their innovative projects, and exchanging ideas with Hydro employees. Dr. Schwerdtfeger also met with executives from Novo Energies, a Montreal based company that has developed and designed a new process that transforms plastics and tires waste to liquid fuels. Schwerdtfeger was part of a U.S. Department of State program that brings U.S. experts to Quebec to engage with their counterparts and other interested Quebecers.

As the new crescent moon ushers in Ramadan, the President extends his best wishes to Muslim communities in the United States and around the world.

Each Ramadan, the ninth month on the lunar calendar, Muslims fast daily from dawn to sunset for 29 or 30 days. Fasting is a tradition in many religious faiths and is meant to increase spirituality, discipline, thankfulness, and consciousness of God's mercy. Ramadan is also a time of giving and reaching out to those less fortunate, and this summer, American Muslims have joined their fellow citizens in serving communities across the country. Over the course of the month, we will highlight the perspectives of various faiths on fasting and profile faith-based organizations making real impacts in American cities and towns. [more/video].

Consul General Lee McClenny joined Aéroports de Montréal President and CEO James Cherry at a press conference announcing the opening of the new departures area for flights to the United States at Montreal’s Trudeau Airport. Passengers on ‘transborder’ flights will be able to check in and complete U.S. security and customs formalities more efficiently, in a larger and more user-friendly space. In his remarks, Mr. McClenny emphasized the excellent cooperation between the governments of Canada and the United States to make travel between the two countries safer and more efficient. Pride of Baltimore II Consul General welcomes Pride of Baltimore II to Montreal
Consul General Lee McClenny, accompanied by Saint-Léonard borough mayor Michel Bissonnet and Consulate staff, welcomed the Pride of Baltimore II sailboat to Montreal for a 4-day visit. Pride of Baltimore II was commissioned in 1988 as a sailing memorial to her immediate predecessor, the original Pride of Baltimore, which was tragically sunk by a white squall off Puerto Rico in 1986, taking her captain and three crew members down with her. Both ships were built as reproductions of 1812-era topsail schooners, the type of vessels, called Baltimore Clippers, that helped America win the War of 1812 and finally secure its freedom. Consul General Lee McClenny welcomed a group of Quebec Members of Parliament (MP) and Members of the National Assembly (MNA) whose districts include border crossings with the U.S. for a discussion with Ottawa-based U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Attache Theresa Brown. The wide-ranging exchange between Ms. Brown, Bloc Québécois MPs Claude Bachand and France Bonsant, and Liberal MNAs Stéphane Billette and Pierre Paradis, dealt with all manner of border-related issues. Ms. Brown also outlined the substantial cooperation that DHS entities enjoy with their Canadian counterparts.

Discovery in the Gulf of St. Lawrence
Parks Canada underwater archaeologists have found what they believe is the wreckage of a U.S. Air Force plane lost in 1942 off the coast near the village of Longue-Pointe-de-Mingan, Quebec. "The United States government was extremely interested to learn of the discovery of the wreckage, and we look forward to working with our Canadian friends to verify the identity of the aircraft," said David Fetter, Consul General of the United States in Quebec City. "This process has been an excellent example of the spirit of cooperation and friendship that has been the core of the U.S.-Canadian relationship in times of both war and peace." Public Affairs Chief Visits Expanding Horizons Exhibit
The U.S. Embassy in Ottawa’s Minister Counselor for Public Affairs Linda Cheatham and consulate staff recently toured the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts groundbreaking exhibition Expanding Horizons: Painting and Photography of American and Canadian Landscape 1860-1918. Close to 200 works by American and Canadian artists shed light on the national and regional identities of these two countries. The exhibit was organized by Associate Chief Curator and dual U.S. – Canadian citizen Dr. Hilliard Goldfarb and has received rave reviews. The U.S. Consulate General in Montreal is supporting American participation in a colloquium connected to the exhibit which will take place on September 18. Expanding Horizons will be in Montreal until September 27, when it will travel to the Vancouver Art Gallery. More information.

This month marks the 50th anniversary of the opening of the St. Lawrence Seaway. The Seaway was created between 1954 and 1959 and stretches 265 miles from Montreal to Lake Ontario, much of that distance along the U.S.-Canadian border. Over the last half century, the St. Lawrence Seaway has served as a crucial thoroughfare from the Atlantic Ocean to the Great Lakes, and serves as an important symbol of the breadth and depth of the bilateral relationship between the United States and Canada. Municipal officials and business executives from Phoenix traveled to Montreal to meet with their counterparts and local leaders in international industries. The visit promoted business ties and friendship between the cities and will build on trade and investment enjoyed by the two regions.

The Consulate General hosted the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Mobile Bay as it docked at the Old Port in Montreal July 7-9. Commanding Officer Vasilios Tasikas met with the Consul General to discuss the Mobile Bay’s operations and U.S. – Canadian maritime cooperation, and then opened up the cutter for a reception organized by the Consulate. Guests learned about the work of the cutter as an icebreaker making waterways safe for U.S. and Canadian shipping. They also heard about the U.S. Coast Guard’s cooperation with Canadian counterparts before enjoying VIP tours of the ship. The Consul General and Commander Tasikas took the opportunity to present Coast Guard sponsored maritime safety awards to representatives of two Montreal-area companies, IT International Telecom Inc., and Transport Igloolik Inc. Consul General Lee McClenny hosted the Consulate General’s annual Independence Day celebration at the Hyatt Regency Montréal. In his remarks, McClenny highlighted the close ties between Quebecers and Americans as well as the significance of the administration of President Barack Obama. The assembled guests, from all sectors of Quebec society, enjoyed the view from the beautiful Hyatt terrace and an exhibit of photos taken in Washington on Inauguration Day by Montreal photographer Christine Bourgier. Guests were also treated to a visit by legendary American singer Stevie Wonder, in town to kick off the 30th Montreal International Jazz Festival. Wonder offered his best wishes for the day, and graciously agreed to take a few pictures with U.S. Consulate staff and guests. American NHL prospects joined their counterparts from Canada and Europe at the recent National Hockey League draft in Montreal. Consul General Lee McClenny met with players and their families to offer his support before the big day. He is pictured with John Moore (Chicago, Illinois) and Jordan Schroeder (Burnsville, Minnesota), two of the young Americans who made the scouts sit up and take notice. The Columbus Blue Jackets made Moore the 21st selection of the draft, while the Vancouver Canucks took Schroeder with the next pick. The Montreal Canadians’ top pick, local boy Louis Leblanc, is slated to attend Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts before joining the Habs’ organization.

The U.S. Consulate General's Commercial Service recently hosted fifteen aerospace companies from across the United States. Representatives from American companies met with their Canadian counterparts and heard industry briefings from the presidents of the Aerospace Industries Associations of Quebec and Canada. The Consulate General co-hosted a reception for participants with the Montreal-based International Civil Aviation Association, and the delegation also visited key Montreal-area aerospace firms. Yiddish Theatre Festival in Montreal 2009 International Cast Appears at Montreal’s Yiddish Theatre Festival
Yiddish theatre companies from the United States and seven other nations joined their Canadian counterparts at the Montreal International Yiddish Theatre Festival this month at the Segal Centre for Performing Arts. The festival is the largest international event on Yiddish theatre ever held, and coincides with fiftieth anniversary of the founding of Montreal’s famed Dora Wasserman Yiddish Theatre. Consul General Lee McClenny attended the opening of the festival’s symposium and told those gathered that the Consulate General was proud to be a sponsor of the landmark multi-cultural event. The famed Guarneri String Quartet made its final Canadian appearance recently at the Montreal Chamber Music Festival. After 45 years of touring the world, the quartet is retiring from stage this month. Formed in 1964, the quartet has been described as one of “the most revered and enduring ensembles of its kind in the world”. Nazi-looted Paintings Returned with Assist from U.S. Courts Nazi-looted Paintings Returned with Assist from U.S. Courts
Consul General Lee McClenny recently attended an event at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts to unveil a painting by Franz Xaver Winterhalter, Girl from the Sabine Mountain, the latest artwork to be returned to heirs of Max Stern, a Jewish art dealer forced to auction his entire collection, almost 200 pieces in total, in 1937 by the Nazi Regime. After the Second World War, Stern moved to Montreal where he slowly rebuilt his collection and became one of Canada’s premier art dealers. On his death in 1989, he donated his collection to 3 universities, Concordia and McGill in Montreal and Hebrew University in Jerusalem. The recovery of the artworks is in large part due to the contributions of the American legal team that took on the case, as well as the U.S Department of Justice and Department of Homeland Security, Immigration and Customs Enforcement. U.S. Vice-Consul Vito DiPaola met recently with political, civic and business leaders in Granby and Knowlton, Quebec, to discuss services offered by the U.S. Consulate General in Montreal and to alert residents to changes to regulations on entry to the United States. The final phase of the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) went into effect June 1, 2009, requiring travelers to present a passport or other approved document denoting citizenship and identity for all land and sea travel into the United States. Among others, DiPaola met with Granby Mayor Richard Goulet, several representatives from the Centre local de développement Haute-Yamaska – including President Paul Sarrazin and General Director Guy Coulombe – and several media outlets in the region. The United States and Haiti share a deeply intertwined history and a long standing friendship. In 1779, freemen from the French colony of Saint Domingue, now the Republic of Haiti, came to the aid of American patriots fighting for freedom at the Siege of Savannah. Today, we remain connected by a Haitian-American community that contributes greatly to the economic, social, cultural, scientific and academic fabric of the United States and by my administration’s steadfast commitment to come to the aid of those in Haiti working to ensure that Haiti’s future is stable, sustainable and prosperous. On this Haitian Flag Day, I am proud to send my warm wishes and those of the American people to the people of Haiti and the Haitian Diaspora as they celebrate during Haitian Heritage Month.

The exhibition, which coincides with the 25th anniversary of the Tour de l’Île and the launching of Montreal’s bike sharing program Bixi, was a collaboration between the Museum, Vélo Québec, Stationnement de Montréal and Transports Québec and seeks to explain the importance of biking in the lives of North Americans. NASA astronaut Gregory E. Chamitoff recently visited Crestwiew Elementary School in Laval. Mr. Chamitoff, a former Crestview student, recently ended his five-month mission aboard the International Space Station and spoke to students, staff and invited guests, offering them a multimedia tour of the Space Station. Montreal-native Chamitoff was selected by NASA for training to become an astronaut in 1998 and qualified for flight assignment as a Mission Specialist in 2000. Staff members have volunteered to go “on loan” from their jobs in Canada, generally for a year, filling vital diplomatic and support positions in Iraq. Tens of thousands of Montrealers turned out for the city’s 185th St. Patrick’s Day parade. Consul General Lee McClenny and other Consulate representatives joined Montreal Mayor Gérald Tremblay, Irish ambassador to Canada Declan Kelly, Bloc québécois leader Gilles Duceppe, Quebec federal Conservative Party leader Steven Blaney, several Quebec provincial Ministers, several members of the Quebec National Assembly, local political leaders and other dignitaries to walk along several blocks of famed Ste. Catherine Street in the bright sunshine. Some 120 groups, ranging from elementary schools to media outlets, and from charity organizations to the Canadian Forces entered floats or marchers in the festivities. CF-18 fighter jets and military helicopters flew overhead to salute the parade. The day began with a Mass celebrated by Montreal Archbishop Cardinal Jean-Claude Turcotte at the city’s historic St. Patrick’s Basilica, attended by Quebec Premier Jean Charest and a number of the dignitaries who marched in the parade. Consul General Lee McClenny joined Premier Jean Charest, International Relations Minister Pierre Arcand and Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) CEO John Harbour to introduce the new Quebec enhanced driver’s license (EDL), which will allow qualified Quebecers to enter the United States by land without a passport when new border requirements take effect June 1, 2009. Premier Charest noted the convenience and utility of the document and Consul General McClenny praised the cooperation between provincial, state, and federal authorities on both sides of the border that had made the project a reality. American Civil Rights activist and scholar Rev. Dr. William McClain visited Montreal this month on a program sponsored by the U.S. Department of State. Dr. McClain worked with the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. in the 1960s, as McClain embarked on a distinguished academic and ecclesiastical career. In Montreal, he addressed current socio-political issues in the context of his experience in visits to the Black Coalition of Quebec and the start-up community group “Yes We Can, Canada.” Dr. McClain, an ordained Methodist minister, also took part in a round table organized by the Consulate General, at which Christian, Jewish and Muslim leaders came together to discuss the role of faith and religion in the public square.[Slideshow]

Consulate Staff Volunteers at Old Brewery Mission Consulate Staff Volunteers at Old Brewery Mission Some twenty-five American and Canadian employees of the U.S. Consulate General in Montreal recently spent a day volunteering at the Old Brewery Mission (www.oldbrewerymission.ca), Quebec’s largest homeless shelter. Consulate employees repainted a large dormitory which houses dozens of the city’s most vulnerable inhabitants every night, donated winter clothing, and were able to cover the cost of painting supplies and more from personal donations. After sharing a meal with some of the Mission’s clients, Consul Paul Mayer commented that the Consulate had long admired the work the Mission does. “We enjoyed the opportunity to take part, even in a small way, in the Mission’s work,” he said. “As native Quebecers, or as Americans who now make our homes here, we all appreciate what an organization like this is doing for our community here in Montreal.” [Slideshow.]

The Canadian Consulates General in Boston, Buffalo and New York hosted U.S. Consul General McClenny and American legislators from New York, New Jersey, and Vermont for a visit to the Champlain / Lacolle border crossing and the Port of Montreal. The U.S. has invested more than 100 million dollars in state-of-the art security and customer service improvements to the border crossing, making the U.S. facility the most modern crossing point along the entire U.S. – Canada border (http://www.cbp.gov/). After the visit, the group returned to Montreal for a tour of the Port of Montreal’s impressive operation. Over 26 million tons of goods were transported through the Port of Montreal in 2007, activity that supported over 18,200 jobs throughout Montreal, Quebec and Canada (www.port-montreal.com). 100th Anniversary of the U.S.-Canada Boundary Waters Treaty
January 11 marks the 100th anniversary of the Boundary Waters Treaty of 1909. We note with pride the century of cooperation with Canada in managing water quality, quantity, and environmental health along our 5,525-mile border. The Treaty also established the International Joint Commission, which has played a vital role as an independent steward of these shared resources. Comprised of Commissioners from both countries, the Commission has been an outstanding example of collaborative governance and stewardship, facilitating cooperation, preventing and resolving water-related disputes, and approving and overseeing operation of several major dams and hydropower stations along the border. Visit to the Old Brewery Mission
Consulate staff members recently visited the Old Brewery Mission in Montreal to continue our contact with Quebec’s largest homeless shelter. The Consulate had become acquainted with the Mission due to its aid to several indigent Americans each year. With the Mission in need of office furniture, and the Consulate holding a surplus of furniture due to recent purchases, the Consulate donated a number of pieces to the shelter. Gagnon, who serves as Deputy Director of the Centre for U.S. Studies at UQAM, visited the U.S. in the summer of 2005 as part of a Fulbright ‘Study of the U.S. Institute on American Politics and Political Thought’ program (administered by the State Department), consulting with various U.S. politics academics and experts. At the invitation of the Société de transport de Montréal (STM), Consul General Lee McClenny toured Montreal’s metro, getting an inside look at the underground transportation system with the highest per capita ridership in North America. The Montreal metro, known as one of the safest rapid transit systems on the continent, has hosted over six billion passengers since opening in 1966. A new command center for the system is due to open shortly, with technical features that promise further advances in safety and security for the metro. [Picture.]

Dr. Marshall is president and founder of the Street Soldiers National Consortium, a community organization dedicated to fighting violence nationwide. He is also the founder and creator of the Alive and Free Movement. Anti-violence activist Dr. Joseph Marshall visited Montreal and the Consulate General October 7-8, sharing his experiences working with youth in San Francisco and elsewhere. Dr. Marshall is president and founder of the Street Soldiers National Consortium, a community organization dedicated to fighting violence nationwide. He is also the founder and creator of the Alive and Free Movement. Dr. Marshall’s organization has secured scholarships to send 133 students on to college from his program. While in Montreal, Dr. Marshall shared his strategies for reaching at-risk youth, including present and former gang members, and exchanged information with Montreal organizations doing similar outreach to youth. Among the organizations he visited were the Tyndale St-Georges Community Centre, the homeless youth outreach center Dans la rue, and the Black Coalition of Quebec.

The Montreal-based International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) recently selected Philadelphia native Brian Colamosca as the winner of the prestigious 2008 ICAO Air Navigation Commission (ANC) Laurel Award for outstanding contributions in furthering the efficiency of international civil aviation. The award cited Colamosca's work in the field of Reduced Vertical Separation Minimum, which enhances airspace capacity and allows airspace users to fly more time- and fuel-efficient profiles while maintaining airspace safety. ICAO also noted Colamosca’s overall contributions to the safety and efficiency of international civil aviation around the globe. ICAO, created in 1944 to promote the safe and orderly development of civil aviation worldwide, is a specialized agency of the United Nations. It develops international air transport standards and regulations and serves as the medium for cooperation in all fields of civil aviation among its 189 contracting states.

On September 25 and 26, the Consulate General hosted Costas Panagopoulos, Associate Professor of Political Science at Fordham University and Research Associate at the Institution for Social and Policy Studies at Yale University. Dr. Panagopoulos engaged audiences at McGill University, the University of Montreal and the University of Quebec at Montreal with his take on the upcoming U.S. election. The Consulate also partnered with the Fraser Institute for a presentation by Dr. Panagopoulos at the University Club of Montreal. While in town, Dr. Panagopoulos spoke with several media outlets in anticipation of the first Presidential debate. [Slideshow].

Consul General Mary B. Marshall hosted a coffee-discussion with Evelyn C. White, author of "A Life", the official biography of Alice Walker (The Color Purple). Ms. White discussed her latest project which explores the historical and contemporary Black presence on Salt Spring Island in British Columbia. Ms. White told an audience of government and community representatives that the first Black settlers on this island were African Americans fleeing persecution in the United States at the end of the 1850s. Although some later returned to the United States, Ms White and photographer Joanne Bealy connected with nearly all those of African descent currently on the island, some of whom are descended from the original settlers. Next year, Salt Spring Island will be celebrating the 150th anniversary of the arrival of the first Black pioneers. [Slideshow].

US Aid being unloaded. Kearsarge Continues to Support Relief Operations in Haiti
USS KEARSARGE, At Sea (NNS) -- USS Kearsarge (LHD 3) continued her support of disaster relief efforts in Haiti Sept. 10, providing logistical support to remote areas hit hardest by this season's tropical storms and hurricanes. On the second day of operations, Sept. 9, pilots from Marine Heavy Helicopter (HMH) Squadron 464 flew relief missions to Jeremie and Les Cayes, delivering approximately 45 metric tons of pre-packaged food such as flour, beans, rice and high-energy biscuits from the World Food Program. Marshall and other Consulate representatives attended a Ramadan Iftar dinner in the presence of several dignitaries, including Quebec Premier Jean Charest, Montreal Mayor Gérald Tremblay and Quebec Minister of Immigration and Cultural Communities Yolande James. For twenty-five years, Egyptian-born Canadian George Saad has organized this event to favor dialogue and promote peace between the various cultural and religious communities in Quebec. Since it was created in 1983, the event has grown from approximately 50 guests to over 400 this year. [Slideshow]
